What material should I use on top of this wooden school desk?

I have an older style wooden school teachers desk. You know, the big heavy heavy thing your old angry teacher had. Do carpentry college degrees exist? or Construction? At the Bachelor's level?

My husband loves labor and wants to pursue college for a type of manual labor job. But it seems like Carpentry degrees don’t exist and ITT Tech has a bachelor’s in construction but that’s a scam school where employers laugh at the degree.
